How to Build a Dream Client List (and Actually Use It)
Most photographers can name a few brands or agencies they'd love to work with. Then there are the names you've collected almost accidentally: the brand you saw in a magazine and immediately looked up, the agency behind a campaign you loved, or the company someone mentioned during a portfolio review six months ago that's still sitting in your Notes app.
Over time, those ideas can add up to a pretty exciting list. Turning that list into a focused outreach plan is where things get interesting.
That's why we created the Agency Access Dream Client List Builder, a new interactive tool that helps turn your dream clients into a personalized outreach blueprint in about 10 minutes. You'll walk away with priority accounts, tailored recommendations, and practical next steps for putting your list to work.
Here's how to build a dream client list that can help guide your outreach, and how to make the most of it once you have one.
Start With the Work, Then Build the List
It's tempting to start by writing down every recognizable company you can think of. Resist that urge for a minute and think about the work you'd actually like to create.
As you start building your list, consider:
- The work you want to do more of: Think about the projects, subjects, and creative styles you'd be excited to shoot.
- The industries you want to work in: Where does your experience already give you an advantage, and where would you like to expand?
- The companies producing work you admire: Look beyond the biggest names and pay attention to brands and agencies whose creative genuinely interests you.
- The relationships you already have: A portfolio review, past introduction, industry connection, or previous interaction can give you a natural place to start.
- Where you want your career to go next: Your list doesn't have to be limited to the work you can win today.
The important part is knowing why each company made the cut. That context will eventually shape how you approach them.
Decide Where to Focus First
Not every company on your dream client list needs to be a priority right away. One simple way to organize them is:
- Tier 1: Priority Accounts. The companies you're most prepared and excited to pursue now.
- Tier 2: Strong Prospects. Companies that fit your goals but may require more research, portfolio development, or relationship building.
- Tier 3: Long-Term Aspirations. Clients you'd like to work toward as your portfolio and career evolve.
From there, start researching the companies at the top. Look at the work they're producing, the agencies and creative partners they work with, and the people involved in commissioning that work. You'll have a much better idea of who to contact, what work to share, and why your introduction might be relevant to them.
If you're not sure where to begin, our guide to How to Research an Agency Before You Pitch walks through what to look for on an agency's website, recent campaigns, and hiring contacts.
Give Every Priority Account a Next Step
With your priorities in place, you can start turning your list into action. Give each Tier 1 company something you can actually do next:
- Find the right creative contact
- Research a recent campaign
- Identify the agency or creative partner behind the work
- Choose the portfolio pieces most relevant to that company
- Follow up on an existing connection
- Send the email you've been thinking about for three months
Those individual actions turn a collection of dream companies into an outreach plan you can realistically follow.
Your list will change along the way, too. You'll discover new companies, relationships will develop, and clients that once felt out of reach may suddenly become much more accessible. You might also research a company you've admired forever and realize the work isn't actually a great fit. Congratulations: you've just saved yourself a lot of emails.
Come back to your list periodically, move companies between tiers, add new prospects as you discover them, and let go of the ones that no longer align with the work you want to create.
